'Commander' viral campaign continues blockily

We just received a totally mysterious comment on our first post about the "Who is the Commander" viral marketing campaign, which is purportedly linked to some upcoming Wii game. The comment, from "CommanderVideo," read:

"00DATACOMPILED11
11
DATAUPLOADCOMPLETE1--WWW1COMMANDERVIDEO1C"

Yay! We've been made complicit in one of those ARG things! Or, at least, some PR person noticed we exist. The new data on commandervideo.com seems to consist only of the above image, "hidden" behind a tiny pink hyperlink. The image doesn't really give us much information that we can use, nor does its filename, J_BN_POMZ_B_NBO.jpg (which, as commenter Aaron points out, is "I AM ONLY A MAN" with all the letters shifted). The image does kind of look like it could relate to an abstract shooting game, we suppose, with a weird cubey ship flying over a weird cubey landscape.

We feel a bit like chumps for furthering this marketing campaign, but if there is a Wii game behind all this nonsense, we want to know about it, and the best way for that to happen is to review, and share, all the material we're given!

Wii doubles December sales, breaks PS2's all-time record? [update]
Nintendo Wii/Gamecube - Latest News
Wednesday, 31 December 2008

News

[Update: Sorry, but it looks like I got this one horribly wrong, folks -- the WSJ was in fact referring to November sales. Thanks, Jay!]

Big surprise: early reports from the NPD indicate that the Wii utterly owned December, "doubling" its sales from December 2007. As it shifted 1.35 million units a year ago, that means this December saw approximately 2.7 million Wiis sold. For those who care, PS3 December sales dipped 19% from 2007, while the Xbox 360 got an 8% year-on-year lift.

More precise data concerning the Wii won't be released until the middle of January, but this could mean the Wii breaks the all-time record for U.S. hardware sales in a single month. Currently, the PlayStation 2 holds that honor, with -- aha! -- 2.7 million sales in December 2002. It's going to be close, in other words.

Don King Boxing makes a surprise comeback
Nintendo Wii/Gamecube - Latest News

News, Screens

Hey, remember 2K Sports' Don King Presents Prizefighter? Kinda? The licensed boxing game was announced last December for release last spring, back before Facebreaker bombed and Punch-Out!! made other Wii boxing games irrelevant. Despite not hearing anything at all since Balance Board functionality was revealed, the game has not been cancelled. Nintendo Everything posted some new screenshots from a mysterious source, indicating that work was being done. We found the screens' origin -- at an official site that had quietly appeared in December for the boxing game, now titled a much less confusing Don King Boxing.

It looks -- okay. It's not going to divert anyone's funds away from Punch-Out!!, that's for sure. It's automatically better than Ready 2 Rumble in that it is devoid of Hasselhoff caricatures. And the vaunted Balance Board training, which is supposed to be a real workout? Looks like the Rhythm Boxing game from Wii Fit. According to GameStop, Don King Boxing is scheduled for a release on March 31, 2009. We'll see how that works out.

UK Minister advocates Wii as learning tool
Nintendo Wii/Gamecube - Latest News
Wednesday, 31 December 2008

News

Tom Watson, UK government e-minister and member of Parliament, thinks that playing Wii beats watching the tube when it comes to helping kids learn. "I'd rather my boy be playing on his Wii than passively watching telly," he said. "Most games are educational," he added. You got that right, buddy. We never would've known that eating flowers lets you throw fireballs and that all of our base belong to you had we not been big into gaming.

"They make you think, focus, challenge and change," he offered. Well, Tom, we think you're right. But, that doesn't mean that, as a parent, you should just toss your child a couple of games and let them get their learn on. Mix in a book every now and then.

MiWi2, for when you want something that vaguely looks like a Wii
Nintendo Wii/Gamecube - Latest News

Imports, Peripherals

London shoppers, beware. The above picture was taken by flickr user abulkasam while out on the town and shows the MiWi2, the latest in the long line of ripoff consoles trying to dupe people who are out shopping for a Wii. With it being the conclusion of the busy holiday season, we just hope some misinformed parent didn't pick one of these up for little Billy or Jane. We can't imagine how horrible one of these would've made some little kid's Christmas morning.

Wii Warm Up: 2008's best publisher?
Nintendo Wii/Gamecube - Latest News

Wii Warm Up

Following up yesterday's conversation at DSF, we figured we'd bring the topic over to today's Wii Warm Up. So, who do you think is the publisher of the year on Wii? Is it Nintendo (that's too easy, though), or a third party? What about in 2009? Who do you think is going to publish the upcoming year's best?
